WHAT IS OC?
OC is short for original character.
A character created by a fanfic author or roleplayer. Said created character does not belong to the canon cast but is inserted by fans for entertainment.
Many OCs appear as long-lost family members, past lovers, or exchange students. These background stories provide alibis for the sudden appearance and previous absences of the OC.
I was reading a person's fanfic the other day. It was centric of their OC, but the original character they made up was pretty cool, so I didn't mind.
If you decide to use a OC for a FC we ask that you please credit the artist by linking to the website you found the art. It could be the artists official website, an online gallery, such as Deviantart, Zerochan, E-shuu shuu, Pixiv, or any other website you found the art from.
If you can't seem to find where you originally found the art, you can always use image search services such as Google images or Tiny Eye. You can upload images you might have had saved on your computer or just use a url and it searches online for similar images.
We might sound pompous, but we want character art that fits well in our universe. Yes, we accept anime art even though the show's original style is not, but there are still certain things we look for in OC art before accepting them as FC in RTCS.
We won't go in to detail with what we allow, but we can give advice on things you should avoid using if you plan to apply with OC art.
No images of stick figures on note book paper.
Do not use images of pictures of images. Like so. That drawing is fantastic, but the quality of the image could be better. Scans work much better if it's an illustration made in traditional media. Editing the picture with computer software could also help. Just by cropping the image alone, the quality improves.
Here are some examples of images I personally would not accept. I'll try to explain why for each.
Dharys- This image is too blurry.
Becca - The drawing itself is not a problem, but the coloring is. The lineart is not clean and the colors are sloppy, giving the impression it's just been slapped on. The saturation and overall color scheme don't seem to mix well with each other. It makes the whole image seem amature-ish.
Little Link - He suffers from a lot of the same things Becca does. He doesn't even have a background. This doesn't mean all images need a background. That doesn't constitute good art. The issue is that here, especially from the shading, the coloring is not at the best it could be.
Keep in mind, if you submit an app with OC art, it will take longer to look over since all staff members will delegate over the art used, and wether it deemed acceptable for the forum. This shouldn't put you off from applying your own art. We can be tough at times, but we don't mean to hurt your feelings if we decline it. We just want to keep the site to a certain code, art wise.
Good luck!
